A warm welcome to the latest edition of the cr0tech blog and apologies that it’s been a while since we last updated you, however trust us when we say this blog is well worth the wait!

We’ve been working away at our premises in Surrey Street and thought we would take this opportunity to give you a sneak peek at our progress.

Cr0tech Co-working Space – January Construction Update

What’s New?

On the planning side Saif has been hard at work both on the ground and behind the scenes as we continue to negotiate the final terms of the lease and plan use of the space.

These things never move as quickly as we would like but we’re pleased with the progress and are still aiming to be open by April at the latest.

The Big Clean Up

Well, onto the hard work and the first stage of any building project is, of course, clearing out the space… for us this has meant moving several tons of rubble and several van loads of rubbish… an unenviable task to say the least!

Concrete Windows… the latest in vacant building security!

One of the most unusual things we’ve come across in the building is the windows… which for reasons unknown to us, had dense concrete poured in front of them. Perhaps a unique security feature while the premises were kept vacant? Whatever the reason they certainly weren’t easy to break through.

None the less we powered through and there was a strange sense of jubilation as we cracked open a window and light streamed into the space for the first time… it almost made up for the hours we spent getting through the concrete… almost, but not quite!

Light Fittings, Plumbing, and all things in between.

In addition to tackling concrete windows we’ve removed the legacy light fittings and metalwork from the ceilings, begun to construct the framework for the partition walls, and First Fix Plumbing will soon be onsite to install a water meter and reroute the pipework.

Other work has consisted of looking at materials, finishes, layout options and so forth… all in all a very exciting time and one that brings our dream even closer to reality.

The Future

We’re currently planning to host April’s edition of Croydon Jelly which would tie in perfectly with our timescale to open the premises, we also hope to announce more events closer to the time.

Overall we are pleased that, after many months of planning and discussion, our dream is one step closer to reality.

As always we need the support of the local Croydon community so we hope you will continue to spread the word and of course if you’re interested in sponsoring the hub, or if you want to learn more about Cr0tech we’d be delighted to hear from you.

THE COMMUNITY

CR0Tech is about building a sustainable tech community in Croydon. Everything we do is underpinned by our goal of positioning Croydon as a credible player on the European technology scene.

THE HUB

Our hub in Central Croydon will provide tech start-ups with a physical place they can call home. We want to offer co-working space, meeting facilities and everything else a start-up might need, at rock bottom prices.

THE EVENTS

Much of what we do will focus on planning and hosting events for the tech community, the local community and for those who are either considering or should be considering Croydon as their base.

THE COFFEE

No tech scene is complete without great coffee. Our plans include opening a coffee shop at the hub with the aim of serving the best coffee in Croydon to satisfy our community's craving for caffeine.
